Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse
The libraries of the University of Washington (Seattle) have put together this wonderful online collection of pictures of the Tacoma Narrows bridge before, during, and after its collapse in 1940. Any engineer can tell you how gusting winds brought down the bridge due to poor design which, in turn, led to modern engineering techniques that ensure the safety of bridges today.
See how the bridge waved like a ribbon in the hand of a child, throwing people and cars around before finally falling into the water. The collection is divided into sections and the pictures can be enlarged for full effect. This may be a "guy thing", but it's cool.
